What is a WARN notice?
Under the federal WARN Act, larger employers generally must give advance notice
before a plant closing or mass layoff. Many states have their own mini-WARN laws
with different thresholds and notice periods. The notice date is when the
filing was published; the effective date is when the layoff is scheduled
to happen. That gap is why this tracker can show layoffs that have not happened yet.
60-Day Notice Buffer
The federal WARN Act generally requires 60 days' advance notice for covered plant closings and mass layoffs. State mini-WARN laws can differ.

Frequently Asked Questions: WARN Notices & Data Methodology
What is a WARN notice?
A WARN notice is an advance notice an employer files under the federal WARN Act, or a state mini-WARN law, before a plant closing or mass layoff. It is a planned action, not a confirmed final headcount.
What is the difference between notice date and effective date?
The notice date is when the filing was published. The effective date is when the layoff is scheduled to take effect. The gap between them is the advance-notice period.
Are these layoffs confirmed?
No. WARN filings can be amended, delayed, or reduced. TrackingLayoffs reports filings as published and logs amendments when the source updates.
